Paul Scholes names best Man Utd striker he played with in 20-year Old Trafford career

Paul Scholes has chosen the best striker he played with across his 20-year career with Manchester United.

The former England midfielder enjoyed a glittering career at Old Trafford between 1993 and 2013, winning 11 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

Scholes also won three FA Cups, two League Cups and the Club World Cup - no doubt thanks to some of the prolific firepower United boasted up front during his time with the Red Devils.

The list of big-name forwards that Scholes lined up behind includes Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Robin van Persie.

However, he claimed it was simple to name Dutch great Ruud van Nistelrooy as the greatest striker he played with.

"That's an easy one," he told the BBC. "I don't want to disrespect any of the other forwards - because I've played with some amazing players, especially at United.

"Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar [Solskjaer] at the time but I always thought I had the best connection with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy joined United from PSV in a £19million move in 2001 and went on to score 150 goals in 219 appearances.

During his five years at Old Trafford, the Dutchman won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Scholes fondly remembers the 2002/03 campaign in which United won the league and he formed a potent partnership with van Nistelrooy, whom he was playing just behind.

He added: "I played the season with him, I think I scored 20 goals playing as a ten. I knew what he wanted, I knew the runs he'd make and where he wanted the ball.

"What a finisher. That man was just hungry. His life depended on scoring goals. He was the one I felt I had a great connection with."
