Paul Scholes namechecks Jadon Sancho in Manchester United transfer warning after Europa League exit

Manchester United must give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the resources to make signings this summer after their Europa League semi-final defeat - starting with Jadon Sancho, says Paul Scholes.

Man United paid the price for missing several gilt-edged opportunities against Sevilla, with

goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denying Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

The Red Devils were punished for their profligacy as the Andalusian outfit came from a goal down after Bruno Fernandes' early penalty, with Suso and Luuk de Jong handing the LaLiga side victory.

It is the third time this season Solskjaer's side have lost a semi-final - having been beaten by Chelsea and Manchester City in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup respectively.

The Norwegian has made clear his desire to add more quality to his squad but a move for Jadon Sancho looks to be in doubt as United remain locked in talks with Borussia Dortmund.

And former United man Scholes, working as a pundit for BT Sport, believes investment is required if United are to challenge for silverware.

“If they want to win trophies, they’ve got to start spending the money," Scholes said.

"They’ve created chances tonight but if Sancho’s in that team they’d have scored.”

Scholes was keen to point out their problems run throughout the team after shoddy marking allowed De Jong to tap home late on, with Victor Lindelof singled out as the guilty party.

"The defensive part of that goal was shocking," he added.

"Surely Lindelof as a centre-back, he's got to be looking at the centre forward. His body shape is all wrong."
