Paul Scholes: Manchester United great appointed manager of Oldham Athletic

Paul Scholes, the former Manchester United midfielder, has been appointed as the new manager of League Two club Oldham Athletic, signing a one-and-a-half year contract at his boyhood club.

Abdallah Lemsagam, Oldham’s owner, told the club’s official website: “Paul has won everything there is to win in football. He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.

“It’s no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so I’m very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic.

“Paul will have my backing 100% and hopefully we can work together to bring success back to this club.”

Confirmation of the 44-year-old’s appointment had previously been delayed, pending clearance from the EFL.

Scholes is a co-owner of National League side Salford City, who are chasing promotion to the fourth-tier.

Oldham and Salford could therefore play in the same division next season, creating a potential conflict of interest for Scholes.

But last week, the EFL ruled Scholes’ 10 per cent stake in Salford was held “purely for investment purposes” and no barrier to working at Oldham.
