Paul Scholes makes prediction on Manchester United's defensive midfield problem

Paul Scholes thinks Scott McTominay will play alongside Paul Pogba for the majority of Manchester United's games this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has persisted with the 4-2-3-1 formation that has defined his tenure across United's opening games this season and some critics have voiced their concerns over this approach, claiming that it limits Paul Pogba's freedom to roam forward.

It's worth noting Pogba has played on the left side of the attack for three of United's first games this term, but when everyone is fit it seems likely the Frenchman will move back into a deeper role in midfield, which means he'll be set to play in the double pivot again.

Pogba was asked to play in the double pivot in United's games against Wolves and Newcastle, however, with McTominay returning from injury, he was partnered by Fred and Nemanja Matic in those games respectively.

Scholes admitted he expects McTominay to become Pogba's regular partner in midfield ahead of Fred and Matic, though.

"One position where I do feel they need to get the balance right is centre-midfield," Scholes told BT.

"It looks like he’s [Solskjaer] going to have a player alongside Pogba, whether it’s Fred, Matic or McTominay.

"I think once McTominay’s fit he’ll be the one who plays in that position and frees everyone else up."

Despite Scholes' prediction, Rio Ferdinand claimed that United need to sign a 'specialist' for the holding midfield position.

"In the long-term, that’s where you’re thinking you need to find a specialist," Ferdinand added.

"That is a specialist position, that holding midfielder who can defend and also start the attacks as well."
