Paul Scholes makes cautious Manchester United title prediction after Leeds win

Paul Scholes believes it may be one year too soon for Manchester United to win the Premier League this season.

That is despite the former United midfielder admitting he is very excited by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side after their 5-1 demolition of Leeds in the opening game of the campaign.

Bruno Fernandes' hat-trick in front of a sell-out Old Trafford crowd — the first since before the covid-19 pandemic — set United on course for a dream first day back in league action.

But Scholes has warned you often see teams' title charges coming, as was the case when Liverpool and Manchester City recently won the league. He believes United may get close to the trophy that's eluded them since 2013 — but that it could be next year when Solskjaer's men lift it.

Speaking on Premier League Productions after the Leeds win, the ex United star said: "It's hard not to [get excited] when you see a performance like that, first game of the season.

"United teams over the last six or seven years, it's not always been as exciting as what we've seen now.

"When Liverpool won the league for the first time, when City won the league for the first time, you felt them coming in the year or two before, you felt they were ready to win the league. I didn't really get that impression last year. I wonder whether this is the year that 'they're coming' and it'll be next year they win the league. I don't know.

"It's hard to say, it's the first game of the season, but you can be nothing but excited by what we've seen today, and what's to come from the rest of the squad."
