Paul Scholes identifies the two signings Man Utd must make to catch Man City

Paul Scholes reckons Manchester United need to strengthen two keys areas this summer if they are to challenge Manchester City for the title next season.

The Old Trafford side finished 12 points behind their city rivals, finishing runner-up to Pep Guardiola's title-winning side as the Premier League campaign came to a close on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjear's main priority is to bridge the gap over the summer by adding reinforcements to his squad.

And Scholes believes United need a creative player like Jack Grealish or Jadon Sancho and a centre-half like Marquinhos from PSG to partner Harry Maguire in defence to get closer to City.

Man Utd have been heavily linked with Harry Kane as he reiterated his desire to leave Spurs last week, but the club legend doesn't feel a new striker is imperative with Edinson Cavani extending his stay, as well as the rise of Mason Greenwood.

He told the Webby & O’Neill show: "I think we need someone who is a creative midfield player. Grealish or Sancho, one of them would be ideal.

"‘It would be great to have a left-footed centre back but I don’t think it’s needed, I don’t think we are desperate for that.

"I would like to see a centre-half come in next to Maguire. I think Lindelof is doing alright, I just think alright isn’t good enough to win a league.

"Marquinhos from PSG, I think he’s be a brilliant centre-half next to Maguire but again you’re talking about a lot of money."

United were linked with both Grealish and Sancho last summer, but it's the Dortmund man's name refuses to go away as the upcoming window approaches.

Man Utd could not reach an agreement with BVB for the winger 12 months ago, but he is available once again at the right price with the Bundesliga side holding out for £100million.
