Paul Scholes hits back at Man Utd keeper David de Gea's critics after Chelsea blunder

Paul Scholes has backed David de Gea despite the Manchester United No 1 copping plenty of criticism for recent errors.

The Spaniard's latest gaff came against Chelsea on Sunday with two of the Blues' three goals owing to De Gea mistakes.

Olivier Giroud's opener trickled under the shotstopper while Mason Mount's strike went straight through him.

De Gea's dip in form can be dated back to more than a year ago while this term he has made high profile errors that have cost his team against the likes of Watford, Everton and Tottenham.

But Scholes, who played alongside De Gea during his final years at Old Trafford, has backed the 29-year-old to come back stronger.

"Yep, he’s having a bad time," said the United legend.

"But without him Utd wouldn’t have finished in the top 10 the last 6 yrs…he’ll be back!"

De Gea was named the club's Player of the Year for four of the past five years and had built a reputation as one of the world's finest goalkeepers.

A move to Real Madrid was previously on the cards and up until last summer his future in Manchester was in doubt.

But the Spaniard put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the club, which creates further complications given his recent decline.

Yet despite calls to drop De Gea and give Argentina's Sergio Romero a shot in goal Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is adamant he will not drop his No 1.

"[David] knows he should save that one 100 times out of 100 but that's football for you," said the United boss when questioned on Sunday's errors.

"It is done. Move on. I know he is a mentally strong person and goalkeeper.

"I can't speak for his confidence but he is mentally very strong. Everyone has to perform and has a chance to stake a claim every time they play.

"It is hard for a keeper to make amends, apart from David making two or three fantastic saves."
