Paul Scholes has given his title prediction and doesn't think Chelsea are in the mix

Paul Scholes believes it will be Manchester City and Liverpool who fight for the Premier League title, and that Chelsea will ultimately fall short.

Thomas Tuchel's side are currently top of the table after nine games, a point and a place clear of the Reds with City in third.

The Blues are expected to mount a serious title challenge after winning the Champions League last season, and spending £97.5 million on Romelu Lukaku to spearhead their attack.

However, Chelsea lost at home to City in September as Pep Guardiola’s side laid down an impressive marker for their own title credentials.

Liverpool, meanwhile have been in scintillating form, they remain unbeaten in all competitions this season and destroyed Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Former United midfielder Scholes admitted it was ‘devastating’ watching his former team lose so heavily to their bitter rivals, and tipped Jurgen Klopp's side to battle it out with City for the Premier League crown.

"I think it’s a devastating day for the Premier League," said Scholes of the Red Devils' drubbing. "Seeing Liverpool go to Old Trafford and win so convincingly, I think it will make City worry.

"Chelsea… I’m not sure, they have been great and I think they are better than I actually give them credit for but I think it’s between Liverpool and Manchester City.

"I think City watching that today, in the Champions League or the Premier League, that will frighten them."

The Reds are the only side yet to taste defeat in the league this season, although they have been held to draws by Chelsea, City and Brentford respectively.

Next up for Tuchel's side will be a trip to relegation threatened Newcastle on Saturday.
