Paul Scholes gives verdict on Manchester United youngster after EFL debut

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was impressed with Di'Shon Bernard's English league debut for Salford City.

The 20-year-old defender is on loan at Salford from United and, having made a sole senior appearance last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Europa League, made his Ammies bow on Saturday. Bernard came on as a 61st minute substitute for Oscar Threlkeld in the 1-1 draw with Crawley Town in League Two.

It was no surprise that Scholes, who has coached United's youngsters in the past, was asked about Bernard in the aftermath of the game.

“He did well, something new a new experience for him," Scholes said. "He can play centre-half, he can play central midfield, he can play right back at a push as well so good experience.

“I thought he did well, he did everything he needed to do and hopefully he pushes on.”

Bernard is one of a number of United youngsters on loan around the English Football League right now. James Garner is at Watford, fellow midfield prospect Dylan Levitt is playing for Charlton, while the likes of Tahith Chong (Werder Bremen) and Diogo Dalot (AC Milan) have gone abroad to get game time away from Old Trafford.

United's policy is to get players aged 19 or 20 out into the leagues to secure a future for themselves, either at Old Trafford or elsewhere.
