Paul Scholes gives verdict on Manchester United midfield after Bruno Fernandes transfer

Paul Scholes admits Manchester United have a tricky situation on their hands trying to decide on their best midfield for the rest of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side strengthened their squad last month when they completed a deal to bring Bruno Fernandes to the club from Sporting Lisbon.

United were in desperate need of midfield reinforcement following injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba, however the duo are both nearing a return in the coming weeks.

The injury news comes as a boost to United ahead of a packed fixture schedule but now Solskjaer has a task on his hands as he looks to decide on his best midfield set-up.

Scholes believes Nemanja Matic and Fred have both been very good this calendar year, but they could drop out following the arrival of Fernandes.

"I think Matic has done really well in the last few weeks, we know Fred has really improved over the last six or seven weeks," he told BBC Five Live.

"He still needs to bring goals and assists to his game but you'd have to put him there. McTominay's form in the early part of the season and then you've got Fernandes and Pogba.

"Fernandes could possibly play in a role further up the field, he looks like he's got goals in him, like he wants to shoot, like he wants to make goals, so I think it's a case now of United of just trying to fit the best players in and get them all on the pitch whatever position they play."
