Paul Scholes gives his verdict on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign at Manchester United

Paul Scholes has backed the job Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is doing at Manchester United.

The Reds' exit from the Champions League increased the focus on Solskjaer's role at Old Trafford, with a shock defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir ultimately costing them passage from the group stage.

Yet United continue to record results in the Premier League, despite not always being at their best, and Solskjaer is rapidly approaching two years in his role as manager.

Reds legend Scholes believes Solskjaer will be looking for more from his side after they secured a top-four finish last season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on dealing with pressure as a manager

Speaking on Amazon Prime ahead of United's game against Sheffield United, Scholes argued that his former side's games in hand mean they could be in a false position in mid-table in the Premier League.

"I think he’s done well," Scholes said of his former teammate. "He had a great start in what’s been a difficult time for United.

"He had a really good run and got the job full-time and then it seemed to dip a little bit. He did really well last season to get them into the top four and again, it’s been a difficult start again this season.

"We say difficult, but if they win their two games in hand then they’re two points behind Liverpool, which is amazing, really.

"So, yeah, I think he’s done alright. I think he’ll expect more from the team."

The Reds' away form has been perhaps the highlight of their season so far, with Solskjaer's side so far having the best record on the road in the division.

Scholes believes this is down to the pace that they have the ability to break at.

He said: "I think it's the speed they've got on the counter-attack, the speed they've got really suits them."
