Paul Scholes fined after admitting FA misconduct charge

Paul Scholes has been fined £8,000 and warned over his future conduct after admitting an FA misconduct charge in relation to betting.

Scholes, who was also ordered to pay £1,800 in legal fees, admitted to placing 140 bets on football matches between 17 August 2015 and 12 January 2019, during which time he was a director of Salford City.

None of the bets placed concerned matches involving Salford City but eight involved Manchester United while Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt were both working at Old Trafford. Butt remains at United as the head of the club's academy.

Scholes also placed a bet on Valencia to beat Barcelona while Gary Neville was in charge of the Spanish club.

"I would like to apologise and I understand and fully accept the fine imposed by the FA," said Scholes.

"It was a genuine mistake and was not done with any deliberate intention to flout the rules.

"I wrongly believed that as long as there was no personal connection between me and any of the matches that I bet upon, then there would be no issue.

"However I understand now that this is not the case and I should have taken steps to verify this at the time."
