Paul Scholes explains why 'brilliant' Manchester United midfield didn't work

Paul Scholes insists Juan Sebastian Veron was a 'brilliant' player but says the formation never suited him at Manchester United.

Hopes were understandably high when the Argentine midfielder became the most expensive transfer in English football after joining United for £28.1 million from Lazio in the summer of 2001.

However, just two years later he was sold to Chelsea for almost half his fee having failed to deliver upon early promise into his time at Old Trafford.

Despite flopping during his United spell, the midfielder still left a positive impact on his teammates with Scholes a fond admirer of his work.

Speaking of his time at the club Scholes hailed the brilliance of Veron but admitted the system was never set-up for him to succeed under Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Look, Veron was a brilliant, brilliant player," Scholes told the Savage Social on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Everyone knows how good a player he was. It just wasn’t the way we played.

"We were always either a 4-4-1-1 team or a 4-4-2, it was very simple. The 4-3-3 was never something we did.

"Maybe we did it on the odd occasion away from home in European games. But that system, at that time, just didn’t suit all three of us [Scholes, Veron and Roy Keane] playing in the same team."
