Paul Scholes explains how Harry Kane transfer would affect Anthony Martial at Manchester United

Paul Scholes believes Anthony Martial would be an even better player if Manchester United signed Harry Kane.

The Frenchman has enjoyed his best goal-scoring season since arriving at Old Trafford after being utilised exclusively as a central striker by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.

Martial scored 23 goals in all competitions and was in particularly good form after the season restarted in June.

Scholes previously doubted whether the 24-year-old had the desire to score goals and lead the line for United, but he has noticed a shift in Martial's mentality and believes he has all the ingredients to play down the middle for years to come.

“Hopefully it’ll make him better (having competition)," Scholes told BT Sport when asked what kind of impact Kane's arrival might have on Martial prior to United's loss to Sevilla on Sunday. "There’s no reason why you can’t have competition in the team.

"You think of the great teams down the years, you have three or four centre-forwards. What’s wrong with that? There’s no doubting he’s been sensational in the last few weeks.

"Players like Fernandes make players like Martial better. Before Fernandes came, United couldn’t create a chance, but now they can because they have a player who looks forward and wants to create chances, he wants to get involved with goals.

"He (Martial) has great ability, he can score all types of goals. Before lockdown, he didn’t look like a centre-forward who was desperate to score goals. I think now he does. It’s come from nowhere.

"The ability, the feet, the intricate play, the link-up he’s got with Marcus, Mason and Bruno is sensational. You just can’t defend it. If he gets faced onto a centre-half, I don’t see how he doesn’t go past him and create a chance.

"We weren’t really sure what he was - was he a wide player, a centre-forward? But now he looks like he wants to score goals, like a Ruud van Nistelrooy, or an Andy Cole.”
