Paul Scholes disagrees with Jermaine Jenas over Manchester United man of the match vs Newcastle

Paul Scholes dismissed Jermaine Jenas' opinion that Luke Shaw was Manchester United's standout player in the 3-1 win over Newcastle.

The Reds moved up to second in the Premier League thanks to the comfortable victory at Old Trafford as Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes found the back of the net for the hosts.

Shaw has been in fine form for United of late and was once again praised for his performance, this time by Jenas, who awarded him BT Sport's man of the match for the clash.

When asked about the decision, Scholes insisted that Rashford was the more worthy recipient.

“I think he (Jenas) got the left-hand side right, just the wrong one. Fair enough, Jermaine sees the game differently, he wanted to pick a defender and Luke didn’t really have much defending to do," Scholes told BT Sport.

"I’d have given it to Marcus, yeah, but we see games differently. I thought Marcus was a threat all night, really, I just wanted them to give it to him more than they did. Marcus has got such ability, 18 goals now this season, four more to beat his record.

"I’m really pleased with Dan James as well, it’s not easy when you’re not playing games to make sure you’re right when you are selected. He’s got such pace, such energy, as his manager says, and that’s a lovely finish as well - I know it’s not the most cultured finish, but he’s put his head down and smashed it. Ruthless finish.”
