Paul Scholes devises Manchester United transfer plan to help Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes

Paul Scholes believes Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes could play together in midfield if Manchester United sign a centre-back this summer.

MEN Sport understands that the club are keen to sign a defender in the upcoming transfer window, with the club interested in Pau Torres and Raphael Varane.

Tactically, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has struggled to accommodate both Fernandes and Pogba in the same midfield, with Fred and Scott McTominay prefered as a double pivot, with Pogba playing from the left-hand side or missing out entirely.

Against lower-placed opposition, United have missed the creativity Pogba brings from deeper areas, though his inclusion does make them slightly more vulnerable defensively.

Scholes, though, believes it's a necessity to have both midfielders linking in central areas and he thinks signing a dominant centre-back could be key to finding the right balance in midfield.

"Yeah, and I think for this team to evolve, they’ve got to try and get Paul into a more attacking position," he told BT Sport.

"I don’t think there’s a need for two holding midfielders, especially in a game like this, but I think Paul needs to be in one of those positions where he can link with Bruno, the link-up play between the two could be sensational.

"I know Paul played on the left-hand side today and has been very good there, but if they got Paul in one of those central positions, then it always frees it up for Marcus or Martial to get into.”

He added: “We did speak before the game about possibly bringing a centre-back in who’s more dominant than what they have now.

"I think that will allow them to play just the one holding midfield player, whether it’s one of them who played today, whether it’s Scott McTominay, or they bring another dominant midfield player in who can play next to Pogba.

"Okay, you might not play that all the time, when you’re playing Manchester City, for example, but I think Man United need that attacking, flowing play and I think Pogba in the centre of the pitch will bring that alongside Bruno Fernandes.”
