Paul Scholes' damning verdict on Manchester United coaches after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacking

Paul Scholes believes the whole of Manchester United’s coaching staff should have left the club, saying he would have been “embarrassed” to stay.

Michael Carrick has been placed in temporary charge following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, while fellow coaches Kieran McKenna and Mike Phelan will remain as part of the backroom staff.

Phelan’s position came under increasing scrutiny during Solskjaer’s final weeks in charge, but the assistant manager has been retained by the club, with the Norwegian the only coaching departure.

United legend Scholes though believes the club should have dispensed of the services of the entire coaching staff, giving a damning verdict of their continued employment ahead of Carrick’s first game in charge against Villarreal.

“We talk about the people above,” Scholes told BT Sport. “Four weeks ago after that Liverpool game, that was the time, the time we knew Ole was going to go, it was obvious.

“So the people above needed to prepare the next manager and next batch of the staff. I'd almost be embarrassed to be on the staff right now, after what happened to Ole, they all should've gone. Whether they were sacked or went off their own back because they were part of Ole's team.

“Ole trusted them each week to prepare and they've let the club and the players down just as much as Ole has.”

He added: "If you’re Ole, a man manager, he’s trusting Michael and Kieran ... so they also need to take responsibility for the performances on the pitch, so what’s going to change? [A new manager] should have been lined up by now."

Scholes knows all about the position United’s coaches find themselves in, having been drafted in to assist Ryan Giggs after David Moyes’ sacking back in 2014.

He said: “We'd give our thoughts to Ryan but he was in charge. Whenever something major happened on the training field Ryan did it.

“You knew he was in charge and he was going to put the final team. I feel with Ole, he put a lot of trust into Michael, Kieran and Mike Phelan which is why they shouldn't be at the club now.

“They're all good friends and they're good people but if I was them I'd feel guilty still working at the club after Ole put so much trust in them.”
