Paul Scholes thinks that Anthony Martial is showing traits similar to legendary forward Thierry Henry during his time in the central role at Manchester United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to sell Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan on deadline day without signing a replacement as he felt he had enough firepower in his squad to deal with the Belgian's departure.
It seems that it will be Martial who gets the chance to stake his claim for the starting berth through the middle after he was handed the iconic No.9 jersey at Old Trafford.
Indeed, the Frenchman led the line during United's opening Premier League fixture against Chelsea, with Marcus Rashford moved to the left wing.
Martial delighted his manager by scoring the Reds' second goal of the game, beating Kepa Arrizabalaga after he was picked out wonderfully by Andreas Pereira.
Scholes was pleased with the performance of the former Monaco man but noticed he continually drifted to the left wing. However, he revealed it may actually be a good sign, as former Arsenal striker Henry did the same.
"I don’t think it’s a bad thing that Martial keeps coming out to the left-hand side," Scholes told Optus Sport. "Remember Thierry Henry, he started games at centre-forward, always ended up on the left side somehow.
"So I don’t think it’s a bad thing, if he [Martial] can be anything like Henry we’d take that now!"
The former England international feels that the current United side are perfectly set up to play on the counter-attack, rather than try to retain posessesion.
Scholes added: "I think looking at today they are perfectly set up to be a counter-attacking team.
"I don’t think they are the type of team when they play against the top teams, like Chelsea or Manchester City, who are going to go toe-to-toe with them with possession. ‘I just don’t think they are a good enough team to do that.
"But if they sit in and defend like [Harry] Maguire can do, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka great defender, and just keep those two Martial and Rashford towards the left-hand side most of the time and get the ball to those two I think they can hurt anybody."
