Paul Scholes compares Man Utd star Paul Pogba to Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard

Paul Scholes says Paul Pogba's qualities remind him of his former England teammate Steven Gerrard.

United legend Scholes has had the almost unique chance to see both midfielders close up, as Pogba was coming through the United youth ranks when he was a senior player at Old Trafford and Liverpool legend Gerrard represented his country alongside him.

Both Pogba and Gerrard have been hailed for their matchwinning qualities in the past, however both also had their critics when their midfield displays didn't turn out quite as well as expected.

And Scholes can see the similarities between the pair.

"I played a bit with Paul and everyone knows the talent he’s got," Scholes told the UTD Podcast, on which he appeared alongside current United star Marcus Rashford.

"He’s been brilliant for Juventus, brilliant for France in the World Cup and really good at times here [at United ] as well.

"He can do everything as a midfield player and you’d probably liken him to Steven Gerrard with the pace, the power, the skill. He can do absolutely everything."

Pogba has sat out most of this season with an ankle injury, and although he had been strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford he could now be forced to stay as the coronavirus pandemic plays havoc with the transfer market.

And while Scholes has taken to comparing Pogba to Gerrard, one man who wasn't in the mood for comparisons was the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

When pressed on who he preferred between Scholes and Gerrard on Twitter, he wrote: "I love Scholes and I think he is more my type of player but I was such a big fan of Gerrard growing up. Think it’s a tie."
