Paul Scholes asks Bruno Fernandes transfer questions Manchester United fans are likely pondering

Paul Scholes has asked a couple of Bruno Fernandes questions that some Manchester United fans are likely pondering after his starring role in the 5-0 win over Club Brugge.

Fernandes bagged a penalty goal to start off the rout at Old Trafford as United cruised to a 6-1 aggregate win over the Belgium side in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Odion Ighalo added the second before Scott McTominay's effort and Fred's brace in a promising night for the Reds.

It was Fernandes, however, who attracted the most praise post-match as United legend and BT Sport pundit Scholes hailed the midfielder for his impact.

But the former playmaker also questioned why the Reds didn't sign the 25-year-old last summer when they showed brief interest in the Portugal international and where the club would be now had they signed him last year.

"It was a perfect night and there were a lot of very good performances. Fernandes stood out and he controlled the pace of play," Scholes told BT Sport. "He looks like he has brought this team to life.

"You wonder where United would be now if he had come last summer. He has made such a difference to this team. You just wonder why we didn't go for him last summer.

"He has made a team that did not look that watchable at times look exciting and very watchable right now.

"When you bring in a player like Fernandes it livens everyone up. Usually a player from a different country takes more time. Hopefully he stays in this form for the rest of the season."

Scholes also compared Fernandes to City star Kevin De Bruyne, adding: "When I think of him the only other player I can think of is Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City. He is the best player in the Premier League but Fernandes is right up there."
