Paul Routledge: Pro-Boris Johnson voters will soon realise emperor has no clothes

Boris Johnson will run the country as he campaigned to win the leadership – flying by the seat of his pants – if he is able to hold them up.

They’re usually round his ankles and that’s where the country is heading with the Eton Mess in No10.

He comes to power without a credible programme for government – indeed, a complete disdain for planning for the future.

He takes over at a time of international crisis after Iran’s seizure of a British oil tanker – having already enraged the mullahs in Tehran.

His gaffe-prone appearances as Foreign Secretary are the shape of things to come. The bumbling, mumbling, stumbling joker will be unmasked as a fraud at PMQs.

Johnson 'can never be a serious person and the country he will lead will not be taken seriously either' (PA)

George Walden, former diplomat and Tory MP, says smirking, egomaniacal amateur Johnson, “can never be a serious person and the country he will lead will not be taken seriously either”.

Johnson’s character was formed behind the bike sheds of that most famous of public schools, not on its playing fields.

He is not a team player.

He is the court jester – a politician willing to shut down the House of Commons if he can’t get his way over Brexit.

His victory will be put to the test in next week’s by-election in mid-Wales.

The process of discovery that the emperor has no clothes begins now.
