Paul Richardson tried to grit through serious injury with Redskins last year

The Paul Richardson era for the Washington Redskins started on an unexpected foot.

Richardson came over from Seattle on a lengthy deal and struggled to have an impact for his new team.

Now fans have a better idea as to why: he tried to play through a fractured clavicle.

Richardson made the revelation to Jake Kring-Schreifels of Redskins.com.

“The end of the bone was stabbing through my skin every day,” Richardson said. “I was having trouble with day-to-day stuff, and it was bigger than me being an athlete. I have a family, I have to be able to do regular stuff around the house every day. If I can’t do that, I’m definitely no use on the field.”

According to the writeup, Richardson had been dealing with pain in his collar bone dating back to training camp. Repeated landings on receptions in practice eventually made things worse.

Richardson admits he tried to play through the injury like he had seen guys like Doug Baldwin do in Seattle. But with the season lost in November by the time he went to IR, it’s hard to blame him for shutting things down.

Like much of the Redskins roster, the team will be better off next season if Richardson can stay healthy and on the field.
