Paul Pogba undergoes ankle surgery as Man Utd hope for quick injury return

Man Utd star Paul Pogba is in hospital to undergo surgery on his injured ankle.

The Frenchman has been dogged by persistent problems this season, which has seen him manage just eight appearances in all competitions.

He missed three months of the campaign following the 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the end of September, before returning in the loss to Watford just before Christmas.

But after featuring just once since, Pogba has now gone under the knife to resolve a fresh but similar ankle issue.

Pogba uploaded a video to his Instagram account on Tuesday of him in a hospital room ahead of the procedure.

Bearing a glum expression, Pogba can then be heard exchanging greetings with a nurse.

He captioned the video: "Hello. Before op."

United look set to be without their star midfielder for up to four weeks as he recuperates from the surgery.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said in a press conference earlier this week: “Paul came back after a long spell out, played in two games, had a reaction, and couldn’t go to Burnley .

"He felt his ankle was sore, so we did a scan. It’s not the same injury, it’s a different injury.”

There was some initial doubt over whether Pogba had consulted United before deciding to undergo the operation, after Solskjaer claimed the player had been advised on that course of action by his "people".

Solskjaer's comments suggested Pogba's may have had some say in the decision of his client, amid speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

However Solskjaer has since clarified the situation by stating there was nothing untoward about Pogba's actions.

When quizzed on his previous response, Solskjaer replied: “His people? As in when you consult your surgeon and the ones you trust, that’s maybe my bad English. You have people you trust and speak to.

"When I did my injuries [and had] loads of knee operations, I had my people in Norway and Sweden I spoke to. Paul has people he trusts and that’s more important.

“When you get that scan, we speak to him, you [as the player] consult your own medical people as well like I did, when I did my operation.

"You want the best second opinion and the advice was to have it done. It’s not a major one and probably, as I said, three or four weeks.”
