Paul Pogba told he struggles with responsibility of being Man Utd's "star signing"

Paul Pogba's struggled with being the "star signing" at Manchester United according to the club's former coach Emilio Alvarez.

The Frenchman returned in 2016 from Juventus for a club record £89m in a move that created its fair share of fan fare.

But in the four years that have followed Pogba has been criticised with inconsistencies overshadowing his obvious talent.

His best football came in the months that proceeded Jose Mourinho's departure when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over on an interim basis.

The Norwegian has regularly backed the 26-year-old and looks to be getting the best out of the midfielder, although Alvarez admits he would be a great addition to Real Madrid, the club he has been heavily linked with.

"I do know that he is a footballer with all the talent to play at any club in the world. Physically he is incredibly gifted," he told AS.

"Where he has problems is the area of the demands that come with being a star signing. At United, he was weighed down by the responsibility and the pressure of being a multi-million euro signing. He was anxious to show his level.

"I stayed with him after training and did extra work. I can tell you that he has incredible dexterity, talent and is incredible athletically.

"His success depends on his head. He needs to make challenges and to be more self-critical. He could be a great signing for Madrid."

Bruno Fernandes' form has taken the limelight away from Pogba with the Portuguese star scoring seven times in 11 games since his January move.

Solskjaer looks to have found a winning formula with the pair playing in a three-man midfield alongside Nemanja Matic.

The Frenchman scored his first goal since the restart last week in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa.
