Paul Pogba throws down gauntlet to Cristiano Ronaldo with Mason Greenwood statement

Manchester United star Paul Pogba has heralded 19-year-old teammate Mason Greenwood as the best finisher he has trained with "so far".

Greenwood proved to be the difference between Manchester United and Wolves on Sunday afternoon after the 19-year old scored his third goal of the season in just the third game of United's campaign.

His 80th minute effort wrote his name in the history books, as the late winner means Greenwood joins an exclusive group made up of some of the best players the Premier League has seen as just the fourth player to reach twenty Premier League goals before he turns 20.

The other names on the list include two former Manchester United stars in Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, as well as Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler.

The goal also means Greenwood is just second teenager to score in the opening three games of a Premier League season after Fowler achieved the same feat in 1994.

Prior to Greenwood's heroics at the Molineux, Pogba sung the striker's praises.

"Mason is more left-footed, but he can shoot with both and his finishing is unreal. I think he is the best finisher that I have seen, that I have trained with so far", the Frenchman told Stadium Astro.

"He's the youngest, but he is just unbelievable and I wish he can score more goals, improve and just help us to win league's again, he's very young and very talented so I want to push him to become better and better."

Given the interview was recorded before the announcement that United had reached an agreement to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, Pogba's "so far" comment is all the more interesting.

Whether or not the midfielder knew of Ronaldo's imminent arrival at the time of his comment is unclear, but the five-time Ballon D'or winner will surely take over the mantle as the best finisher Pogba has played with once his move is confirmed.

Ronaldo enjoyed great success during his first stint at United, winning three Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League but the stakes will be even higher for him to inspire his old side to their former glories.

The Portugal international is likely to be in among the goals once he returns, as boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already explained how he plans to deploy him.

"Cristiano has evolved as a player, he played wide right wide left, he’s more of a centre-forward for me. We played with two up front, three up front I want him in the box scoring goals."
