Paul Pogba shows he can lead Man Utd into a brave, new era with imperious Roma display

Mino Raiola has gone fairly quiet on the Paul Pogba front recently.

That must mean the super-agent either has something lined up for his Manchester United man this summer or he is being careful not to rock the boat ahead of negotiations on a new Old Trafford contract.

The wise money would be on the latter because, after a mixed season, there are not going to be that many blue-chip suitors for the World Cup winner.

With post-pandemic finances in mind, there are not going to be too many elite pursuers prepared to match the £290,000-a-week wages he earns at United.

And it is probably only United themselves who would be ready to give him a big increase in any new deal - and now Ed Woodward is on his way out, even that is not a certainty.

It is not that Pogba is not world class. He is. Maybe just not often enough.

Not many players go through the whole range of merit marks in one match but Pogba manages to do it on a quite frequent basis.

And not many players concede spot-kicks quite like Pogba. Four of the last six penalties against United at Old Trafford have been conceded by Pogba.

The handball shout against him that presented Roma with an equaliser was a little harsh but his defensive composure is questionable.

To say Pogba can be frustrating is an understatement.

But the fact is that Pogba IS the sort of stellar talent United need if they are to seriously challenge Manchester City and seriously challenge for Champions League honours.

If you had any doubt, look at his involvement in United’s first and second goals, not to mention his peachy header for United's fifth.

The turning of Chris Smalling was sublime, the pass to Edinson Cavani almost as incisive and clever as the Uruguayan’s assist for Bruno Fernandes.

And while his initial ball to Cavani ahead of the second looked simple, it set Roma, fatefully, into retreat.

Another intelligent pass should have been converted by Scott McTominay.

Quite simply, every time Pogba had possession, something looked likely to happen.

Once in his groove, he was finding team-mates with one clever pass after another.

He was at the centre of everything destructive about a second half United performance that makes them certainties for a spot in the Europa League final.

And that is why it will be a good thing for United if Raiola is not plotting a move away.

Because for all the trouble his agent might cause, Pogba showed he can still be worth it.
