Paul Pogba sends message to Manchester United fans over title challenge

Paul Pogba insists the Manchester United squad will not be getting carried away with their status as Premier League leaders, but accepts it is a big moment for the fans.

Pogba scored the only goal of the game as United won 1-0 at Burnley to hit the front after 17 games of the season, three points clear of Liverpool in second.

It's the first time United have been top of the Premier League in January since 2013, which was the last time they won the title under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But Pogba has stressed there is plenty of work still to do if United are to end their eight-year wait for a title in the post-Ferguson era and he expects the battle to get tougher between now and May.

“It is [a big moment], for us and the fans it’s great," Pogba told MUTV. "It’s still a long way to go, now we’re there we have to stay there, this is the difficult part now, it’s going to be harder and harder and that's how we improve and get better.

“We really focused today, our head is in the league and we have to keep going."

United could go six points clear if they can win at Anfield on Sunday, ending Liverpool's almost four-year unbeaten home record in the Premier League in the process.

United will be defending a 22-game unbeaten streak away from home domestically in what promises to be a thrilling battle and Pogba is aware just how big a game it is.

“It’s a big one, we have time to recover to get ready for it and go and get the result we want," he said.

Pogba's goal at Turf Moor means United will travel to Merseyside with that three-point cushion and he paid tribute to Marcus Rashford for the assist.

“It was a great ball, I had the feeling to go, I just volleyed it, it touched someone and went in, it’s not the perfect goal, the shot wasn’t the best but it went in," he said. “I’m happy with the performance of everyone, we kept the focus defensively, it was a great performance."
