Paul Pogba opens up on Arsenal allegiances as Man Utd star picks 6 footballing idols

Paul Pogba has revealed he was an Arsenal fan – before switching allegiance to Manchester United.

Pogba started to follow Arsenal because of their core of France players who helped the nation win the 1998 World Cup, which included one of his footballing heroes, striker Thierry Henry.

But Pogba, himself a World Cup winner with France, said he switched from Arsenal to supporting United, because his older brother followed the Reds.

“I will be honest,” said Pogba. "At the start, I was an Arsenal fan – obviously because of all the French players, you know.

“Me and my brother were, but my other brother was a Manchester United fan.

“I couldn’t say anything so I used to love Thierry Henry and, because of him, I was an Arsenal fan. “Then I changed and went on to choose with my other brother.

“No Arsenal, I went with the other one, the United fan!”

Asked to name his football idols growing up, Pogba said: “I had Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Djibril Cisse and Kaka.”

Meanwhile, Pogba's future remains unclear, giving the uncertainty surrounding the transfer market this summer in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Having tried unsuccessfully to force a move away from United for the past two seasons, Pogba and his agent, Mino Raiola, are likely to try to make it third time lucky this summer.

But with the complexion of the market unclear, Pogba may well have to stay at United and prove himself all over again to vindicate his supporters and win over his critics.
