Paul Pogba contract update as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issues latest on Man Utd star

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is convinced Paul Pogba will pledge his future to Manchester United.

Pogba showed his enduring worth to United by returning from a six-week injury lay-off to score the winner that knocked AC Milan out of the Europa League.

The France World Cup winner scored within three minutes of coming on, his introduction inspiring United to the win that earned them a quarter-final place.

Pogba, United's £89million club record signing, has one year left on his contract, and although talks have begun about extending his deal, no agreement has been reached.

Mino Raiola, Pogba's agent, has claimed his client wants to leave, but Solskjaer said the midfielder, 28, showed how much he cares about United with his match-winning display against Milan.

“I think everyone in the team - and Paul included - are just focused on doing as well as we can this season,” said Solskjaer.

“I don't think any energy would be used on the speculation. Of course we've got discussions and talks.

“When you see Paul playing like he did, when you see him come back to training, it shows how much he cares for us, how much he enjoys playing and how much we can benefit from having him here.

“We have to see how much Paul can play. I don't think he can last 90 minutes and I'm not sure he can start.

“But you can see the impact he can make if he comes on as a sub. If he feels okay, maybe we can start him as well.

“We have to see who the runners and riders are after Milan. It's been a long travel and we were late back. We'll see. I hope he's ready to start.”

Having Pogba back for the run-in is a huge boost for Solskjaer, who hailed the mental resilience of his stars as they enter the defining stage of the season.

United, who go to Leicester in the FA Cup quarter-finals tomorrow, are playing every three days, because of the truncated schedule in the wake of the pandemic.

But the Red Devils remain on course for a top-four spot and FA Cup and Europa League glory, with Solskjaer impressed by the mental fortitude and character of his players.

"The belief and the attitude is there,” said Solskjaer.

"I have to say I'm really impressed by the way they recover and get ready for the next game, because it's relentless.

"They're preparing to perform at the highest, highest level and it's not like we've had any 'gimmes' in the draws.

“Every game has been a game you have to dig deep to win.

"This is another one, Leicester away. Of course, we drew in the league against them and we know we have to defend well against them.

"They've got Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho and other quality players there, so we know we've got a game on our hands."

Solskjaer is hoping to welcome back Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial to the squad following injury, but Marcus Rashford is doubtful with an ankle issue that forced him off against Milan.
