Paul Pogba becomes seventh player to register four assists in Premier League game

Paul Pogba became the seventh Premier League player to register four assists in a single game in an inspired opening day showing for Manchester United.

Pogba was on fire as the Red Devils thrashed bitter rivals Leeds 5-1 in front of a packed-out Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men sent a message to the rest of the league as they got off to a flyer, with Pogba among United's imperious performers.

The Frenchman continues to be linked with a move away from the club with under a year left on his contract, but gave supporters a reminder of his world-class ability in the emphatic victory over United's bitter rivals.

Pogba's four assists means he has already surpassed his total of three from the entirety of the last league campaign.

And he joins a list of just six other players who have achieved the remarkable feat in Premier League history.

Denis Bergkamp, Jose Antonio Reyes, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Adebayor, Santi Cazorla and Dusan Tadic are the only other players to have set up four goals in one league game.

The pick of Pogba's assists came as he played in Mason Greenwood with a superb pass from deep to reinstate United's lead after Luke Ayling's stunning equaliser.

He linked up brilliantly with hat-trick hero Bruno Fernandes, who continued where he left off last season with three emphatic finishes.

Pogba's future remains in doubt and it is uncertain whether he will stay at Old Trafford beyond next season, but Solskjaer insists he shares a positive relationship with the World Cup winner.

The Norwegian boss started him on the left of a triple-pronged attack and reaped the benefits.

"I've had a great relationship with Paul all the time, ever since he was a kid," Solskjaer told BT Sport in his post-match interview.

"Today's message was just about: go out and enjoy yourself. He had 45 minutes against Everton [in pre-season], which which was not his best.

"But today we just gave him the freedom overall."

Pogba also became the first United player in a decade to notch three assists in a single league game, a record he achieved in just 53 minutes.
