Paul O'Grady says it's 'b******s' that gay marriage is still illegal in some places

Paul O'Grady slammed the illegality of gay marriage as he picked up a prestigious award.

The TV legend said it's "b******s" that some countries, including Northern Ireland, are yet to legalise same-sex marriages.

Paul chatted to Mirror Online as he picked up the Trailblazer prize at this year's British LGBT Awards.

The 63-year-old, who married partner Andre Portasio in 2017, said: "It's b******s. People who love each other aren't allowed to celebrate that?

"If just giving that piece of paper to someone can mean so much then what's the trouble? You have a bit of a party with all your mates, get hammered, go on holiday, I don't understand it.

"People need to learn to keep their nose out of other people's business when it doesn't concern them. If you go to bed in the night and you're called Tom and you wake up in the morning and want to call yourself, Maureen that's fine by me."

Paul admitted that married life is "just the same as single life" to him, as he'd been with Andre for 10 years already before they tied the knot.

The Blind Date and For The Love Of Dogs host also confessed that he doesn't believe he deserves the Trailblazer award, despite his years in showbiz as drag queen Lily Savage.

He told us: "I'm delighted with this, I didn't expect it.

"I'm genuinely delighted, I'm very proud to receive it, I've just always been myself and wanted to live my life without hurting anybody and I think that's the secret to it really.

"I'll tell you what it is with me, no matter who it is, I'm a champion of the underdog because I've been an underdog myself and I know what it's like. I won't listen to anybody call someone fat or this or that or ugly or whatever."

"I don't know whether I deserve this," he added.

Paul also blasted the abuse people get on social media, and explained why he doesn't use it.

He said: "I'm not on social media because I don't want to bring these loons into my life but if someone's being bullied, Christ I'm in there. Whether it's kids or adults, or whatever, I won't have it.

"And homophobia and misogyny, I've got no time for it at all, I never have. I was brought up that way so I'm quite gobby. Which has been my downfall on many occasions.

"We're not second class citizens, we shouldn't be in the bloody shadows. You know, what we've been through with AIDs and everything and seen our friends dying, our loved ones, it's hard but we're strong people.

"And then you've got social media where people have got beautiful teeth, beautiful hair, they've got all this pressure on them which I didn't have as a teenager and I worry about people being bullied.

"You fret when you're young, and it's only when you get older that you realise you need to calm down and think why didn't I just enjoy it?"
