Paul O'Grady's countryside home infested with colony of pipistrelle bats

Paul O’Grady says his countryside home has become like The Addams Family mansion after a colony of pipistrelle bats moved into his loft.

Animal lover Paul has had issues with other visitors, slugs and rats, but is fond of his new housemates, referring to them affectionately as his “lodgers”.

He says: “It’s like the Addams Family at twilight. They all come flying out, all the bats.

“I’m standing there going, ‘Fly! Fly! Fly!’”

But he does have one complaint about his uninvited guests.

“They smell,” says Paul. “That’s the only thing. They don’t bother me. We don’t really have much to do with each other.

“I go up once a week and get the rent, and that’s it.

“They’re sweet little things. When I was writing books, I would have my window open at night and a couple of them would fly in and land on the curtain. I would take them off and put them on my jumper.”

Chatting to Gaby Roslin’s Let’s Gab online talk show, he adds: “They are nice, I like bats.”

Paul has also been plagued at his home in Aldington, Kent, by other pests, including rats and slugs.

Discovering two rats had chewed through his wardrobe, the TV presenter admits he hid downstairs wielding a baseball bat until pest control officers could remove them.

Meanwhile, he endured an “infestation of slugs” inside his house.

“It was like a horror film,” he says.

“I thought we were going to be eaten alive by killer slugs.”

No wonder he doesn’t mind the bats.
