Normal People star Paul Mescal has responded to the reactions on social media to photos of him leaving the shop in his O'Neills shorts with some drinks.
The actor who plays Connell went viral last week when photographed out and about in London in his shorts.
The 24-year-old was an underage GAA star with Kildare and Marty Morrisey asked him if being photographed in his shorts was a "global plan" to popularise GAA clothing.
Mescal replied on RTE radio One: "To be honest it was my grand plan to go up to the shops and get a couple of cans of gin and tonic!
"But that stuff is hilarious. And that is probably the kind of stuff that requires a bit of adjustment because I'm aware now that if I go to the shops, sometimes I'm being photographed.
"But no better item to be photographed in than a pair of Maynooth GAA shorts!"
"One of the things I'm passionate about is the GAA and to not only bring that to a British and American audience but now the show has been bought in like Brazil, Switzerland and places.
"All the distributors have picked it up. I think it sold in 22 countries recently so it's incredibly exciting.
"And they're all going to get to that scene in episode one and they'll be like, 'what in God's name are these mental people playing!'
