Paul Mescal: Agent issues statement after MTK gym training pic backlash

Paul Mescal is no longer training at an Australian gym with links to Daniel Kinahan.

The Normal People star came under fire after he was caught on camera at a gym owned by MTK Productions – a company allegedly linked to the Kinahan cartel.

He's in Australia as part of a new feature film being produced by film companies Goalpost Pictures and Chapter 2.

And a statement issued to RTE's Today With Claire Byrne said the production compnay "was not aware of the connection between the gym and the man named by Irish courts as a crime boss."

It added that Mescal, 25, was "required to undertake boxing training" as part of his role in the film.

"Paul is no longer training at the facility."

The statement comes after Mescal came under fire over a video that showed him celebrating his 25th birthday in the Sydney gym.

Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond said his appearance in the gym represented a "spectacular error of judgement.

"This is a spectacular error of judgment from Mr Mescal or more likely his own management and PR team," said Mr Richmond.

"Daniel Kinahan’s ties to MTK still remain a hot topic, despite their assertions. The world must be aware that MTK and anyone involved with Daniel Kinahan is toxic.

"It’s a disappointment but I have no doubt Mr Mescal will acknowledge this error of judgment or his ignorance of what and who lives behind MTK."

The controversy erupted after a BBC Panorama documentary on Kinahan's ties to boxing and crime aired last week.

Members of the team subsequently received threats, with a warning from the PSNI to the BBC of an "unspecified threat."

This morning, Kinahan denied responsibility for the threats, in a lengthy statement that saw him defend his record in boxing and deny any involvement in crime.

In the statement, issued to talkSPORT radio, Kinahan said: "I have started from the bottom and worked my way up.

"I am proud to say today that I have helped organise over a dozen major world title fights.

"I continue to be involved in planning multiple record-breaking and exciting world title fights: I’m doing all I can to give fight fans around the world the fights they want."
