Liverpool are 'too open' ahead of their clash with Man City on Sunday

Paul Merson believes that Liverpool are ‘too open’ ahead of their clash with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds are one of the most entertaining sides in the Premier League and have scored 15 goals in just six games.

However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson is adamant their attacking style offers up too many opportunities for the opposition.

"They’re great to watch but it’s too open, too open,” he said on Sky Sports.

"AC Milan went there a few weeks ago and scored two goals, Palace could’ve scored a couple before Liverpool got going.

"They’re wide open and it might cause problems, I think they’re a bit lackadaisical at the minute.

"They’ll score goals but they’re still one of the most wasteful football teams in the league."

Despite Merson’s criticisms of Liverpool’s style he believes they should open up the game against Man City on Sunday because they have the more potent attack.

He added: “Tomorrow they should open the game up. They've got better finishers than Man City, better goal scorers than Man City.”

Merson also paid tribute to City’s Bernando Silva ahead of the clash on Merseyside.

The Portugal midfielder was rumoured to be on his way out of the Etihad this summer, but has been an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

Merson said: "He’s a good footballer, he’s got a good brain, he plays well, I thought he’d be surplus to requirements, gone, but he's an outstanding player, team player, he reminds me of David Silva. That’s a proper player"
