Paul Merson says Jose Mourinho already has the Premier League's 'best striker' at Tottenham

Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane is the best striker in the Premier League.

Kane, who won the Premier League Golden Boot in successive seasons back in 2015/16 and 2016/17, has scored 18 goals in 29 league appearances this campaign.

However, it’s been an injury-riddled campaign for the England captain, who was expected to miss the remainder of the season until the coronavirus pandemic rescheduled the remaining matches.

Mourinho admits Spurs in 'hands of others' in battle for European qualification

The Spurs talisman has been rumoured to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer after fuelling rumours with his comments back in March, being linked with Manchester United mainly.

Merson, speaking on Sky Sports ’ Soccer Special, has no doubts that Kane is the most complete striker in the top-flight, and believes the break in play between March and June was perfect for the 26-year-old.

"Harry Kane, for me, is the best centre-forward in the league in my opinion,” the ex-Arsenal midfielder said.

"He's the finisher, he scores all kinds of goals, left foot, bends it with his right foot, scores headers - no doubt about it.

"The break has been perfect for someone like Harry Kane. He was struggling, he had an injury."

His Sky Sports colleague, Matt Le Tissier, continued the praise for Kane and even compared him to the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer.

Shearer scored 260 goals during his Premier League career, and at 26, Kane has already struck 142 times in the English top-flight.

Le Tissier said: “For me, he is probably the only person since I've retired that I've looked at and thought 'you have got a chance of reaching Alan Shearer'.

“He really has been that good and that consistent in terms of goals and that's something that might be playing on his mind.”
