Paul Merson's Manchester United midfield rant as he makes ominous silverware statement

Paul Merson has slammed the Manchester United midfield in a fierce rant surrounding their lack of fight and grit amid recent performances.

The former Arsenal attacker said that he doesn't see any piece of silverware being won at Old Trafford with the current crop of midfielders after notable capitulations against Liverpool and Manchester City.

Two deflating defeats to their nearest rivals inflicted misery on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the Norwegian facing pressure surrounding his position at the helm.

Merson reiterated statements that former Manchester United players Gary Neville and Roy Keane have eluded to in their criticism of the midfield department.

Solskjaer brought in a tactical tweak which brought success in their win last time they were in the capital against Tottenham Hotspur as they opted for three at the back in a 3-4-1-2.

But much of the discussion throughout the season has been around the balance in the United midfield as the struggle to field Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Fred, Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood together continues.

"They haven't got the players if you want to win anything in this league or anything in football, World Cup's, Champions League, you have to have a dominant midfield, they haven't got that," Merson said speaking on Soccer Saturday prior to the Watford clash.

"When do you ever watch Manchester United and go 'ooh they rip that up, the midfield dominated that, McTominay, Fred, Pogba' when have we ever watched Manchester United on Super Sunday, Saturday Night Football and seen the lads go 'he took the game by the scruff of the neck, he dictated the game, this and that?' Never.

"This is Manchester United and we never ever have that and if you don't have that I don't see them winning anything to start with, you've got to dominate your midfield, if you don't win anything in the midfield I don't see where you win anything."
