Paul Merson's damning verdict on Jose Mourinho and Tottenham that will rile Spurs fans

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has issued a damning verdict on the current situation on Tottenham Hotspur under manager Jose Mourinhio.

Merson, writing in his weekly column for the Daily Star, has blasted Mourinho, insisting that the Portuguese boss has not improved the club's fortunes.

Since taking over in November, following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino, Mourinho has taken charge of 19 matches in all competitions, winning 10.

He has led Spurs up the Premier League table, guided them into the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League and the the last-16 of the FA Cup.

Jose Mourinho on Spurs' progress under him

Despite the positives seriously outweighing the negatives, Merson has hit out at Mourinho, insisting that it is looking like a repeat of his tenure at Manchester United all over again.

Writing in his Daily Star column, Merson said: "Jose Mourinho has not improved Tottenham and after Jan Vertonghen's strop it looks like Manchester United all over again.

"I said when he went there it would give them a lift and there would be a charm offensive - and he was all smiles for a while.

"But everyone knew it wouldn't last, don't they? He's gone back to being Grumpy Mourinho again. And I don't see how he's improved them at all. Not one bit."

Right now, Tottenham currently lie fifth in the Premier League table, just four points behind Chelsea, who currently occupy the final Champions League berth.

Though the gap is not that big, Merson is not convinced that Spurs can make up the ground.

Merson added: "Chelsea are in the driving seat to finish fourth and I can't see Spurs catching them right now.

"They are a very lucky football team at the moment because they've been ripped to shreds in their last two matches but still managed to win.

"I can stomach Manchester City ripping you apart. But Southampton? Come on."
