Paul Merson proven wrong on Antonio Conte's stars after Tottenham's masterclass vs Aston Villa

Antonio Conte's front three are becoming unstoppable at the moment, with the trio making all eight goal contributions for Tottenham against Aston Villa on Saturday. It was a hattrick from Son Heung-min at Villa Park, with Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski picking up an assist each.

The Swede got Spurs' second goal, which was also assisted by Kane and the trio created a number of other chances against Steven Gerrard's side. The victory has kept the Lilywhites fourth in the Premier League table, with seven games left to play.

Son and Kane have been producing combination goals for years and even more so this season, breaking the Premier League record earlier in the season. The introduction of Kulusevski, with his arrival in the January transfer window, could've gone either way but the 21-year-old has slotted right in and made an immediate impact.

Ahead of Saturday's game, Paul Merson and Clinton Morrison were seen having a debate on Spurs being a 'one-man team', which has been a claim made in the past, with Kane's influence in the final third. "Son and Kulusevski play when Kane plays. If Kane doesn't turn up, the other two aren't playing. If Son's making runs, who's finding him?" Merson said.

"If Son don't make the runs, how is Harry Kane going to find him? Who's he going to find?" Morrison responds. "He'll score goals," Merson continues.

"If Harry Kane doesn't turn up, Tottenham aren't winning any games. He turns up against Man City, nine out of ten they win the game. He turns up against West Ham, they win the game. Turns up against Newcastle, they win the game. He doesn't turn up at Burnley, look what happens...they lose.

"If you've got a Ferrari car you need an engine, he's the engine." However Merson has been proven wrong in the last few games.

Spurs have scored nine goals in their last two matches and the England captain hasn't scored any of them. How can Tottenham be a one-man team when this 'one man' hasn't scored a league goal since the middle of March?

Spells of the match at Villa Park saw some shaky defensive moments and the home side had 19 shots on target. However, Tottenham brought enough quality to the game offensively, to slot four goals past Emiliano Martinez.

After the game, Darren Bent rightfully praised Spurs' attacking trio and commended Conte for bringing someone like Kulusevski to Tottenham. "The way Kane has developed his game, the quality of his passing, Kulusevski and Son are like the red arrows. Running in behind, and not only is the ball coming but it’s coming with quality.

"It’s what has helped Spurs out a lot this season. I think because the team is playing well and goals are coming from elsewhere in the team, Harry Kane is good enough to know he’ll get his goals eventually, he’s so intelligent and can finish with both feet, but it’s okay. Harry Kane, with his quality, will score goals no matter what."

Graeme Souness also agreed with the former Lilywhites striker and reiterated the quality that the 28-year-old has, highlighted by his impact, even when he isn't the one scoring. "It’s easy to talk about great players and what they do on the ball, but time and time again, looking at Spurs now when they defend, Harry is like five yards outside his own box. He’s putting the hard yards in.

"What a great example for kids, his teammates, and anyone who aspires to be a top player. He is genuinely a world-class player, there’s not a team that wouldn’t welcome Harry Kane right now," Souness explained.

"Going forward, Spurs are very clever. They have three strikers now that are all capable of playing passes and scoring wonderful goals. They weren’t at their best, but they have three players that can nick you games and even when you don’t play well you can get results."

That's what is so great about the front three. They not only want to help their team in the final third and slot balls into the back of the net, but they all also work hard to get back and help their team defend too.

When Son scored, his celebrations started by finding the teammate who assisted him so they could enjoy the moment together. Kulusevski showed selfless play when he crossed the ball to the South Korean to fire into the back of the net, when he could've taken the shot himself.

Kane is used to scoring all the goals but he is currently managing to make an impact in a deeper role, creating for his teammates to add to the goal sheet. The trio are complimenting each other and performing at the levels Conte could only hope for.

After the game, Sky Sports put up the statistics for the number of goal involvements from players in the Premier League, since February 2019. Kane and Son were at the top with 13 and 11 respectively.

Despite only coming to the Premier League at the start of the year, Kulusevski is already third, with nine involvements, three more than Kai Havertz and Ivan Toney. Spurs have just seven games left of the season and will rely on the front three to continue making a positive impact, in their continued battle for a spot in the top four.
