Paul Merson pokes fun at Unai Emery's Arsenal tenure with Mikel Arteta verdict

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has poked fun at former Gunners boss Unai Emery after issuing his verdict on Mikel Arteta following the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.

The Gunners took a first-half lead at the Emirates Stadium through Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng and looked to be in control but late efforts from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham turned the tie on it's head.

While that leaves Arteta still seeking his first victory as a manager, having drawn 1-1 with Bournemouth in his first match, there were a number of positives that stood out.

Arsenal's pressing on Chelsea earned plaudits, while the performances of Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil were also notable - with the latter seemingly handed a new lease of life.

Merson identified Arsenal's pressing as a stand-out from the result, taking the opportunity to poke fun at Emery by comparing him to his predecessor, Arsene Wenger.

"For the first half against Chelsea, it didn't look like Arsene Wenger was in charge. And that's the biggest compliment I can give," he told Sky Sports.

"They worked their socks off, but were never going to keep that up for 90 minutes, because they haven't done that in 10 years. That high pressure, closing down, Chelsea couldn't get out or put two or three passes together.

"You looked at Arsenal in that first half and thought: 'Well this is Arteta's team'. He'd got them closing down. But obviously, they were going to fade. Chelsea took advantage of that, and fair play to them.
