Paul Merson picks out Arsenal star who has "turned a corner" ahead of north London derby

Paul Merson claims Willian has "turned a corner" just in time for Arsenal's encounter with local rivals Tottenham.

Willian arrived at the Gunners on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer but has failed to replicate his best form since his move from west to north London.

The Brazilian winger has not scored in 29 appearances for his new club and has struggled to nail down a role in Mikel Arteta's starting line-up.

There have been signs of improvement recently, however, as Willian has chipped in with four assists in his last four games.

The 32-year-old's resurgent form has given Merson added confidence Arsenal can clinch the bragging rights with victory over Spurs on Sunday.

" Arsenal are a different team to the one Spurs beat in December," the Highbury legend told the Daily Star .

"Bukayo Saka is playing really well. Willian looks like he has turned a corner. Nicolas Pepe had his best game yet against Leicester.

"And Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is scoring goals again and looks much more confident. Arsenal will have to keep the back door shut, but I give them every chance in this game."

Merson also criticised Spurs for being too reliant on their forward trio as he made a bold prediction about their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

"I think Arsenal are favourites against them this weekend. I really do," said Merson.

"If both teams play to the best of their ability I think Arsenal win the game. I think their passing and movement is better.

"Spurs rely too much on Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, and lately Gareth Bale."

He added: "And if Spurs don’t win, that’s it for their top four chances. They can’t afford to lose this game. One hundred per cent."

Tottenham are currently seventh in the table, five points behind fourth-place Chelsea with a game in hand. Arsenal, meanwhile, are 10th, seven points behind their north London rivals.
