Paul Merson nearly "fell off chair" when told how much Arsenal will pay for Thomas Partey

Paul Merson says he nearly "fell off my chair" when he learnt that Arsenal could pay just £46million for Thomas Partey.

The Gunners are desperate to strengthen their attack before the window slams shut this Monday, and after missing out on Houssem Aouar are ready to sign Partey.

According to Goal, Arsenal have this Monday indicated that they are willing to pay the Atletico Madrid midfielder's release clause of £46million.

The north London club are also organising having the player complete his medical in Spain to speed up the process.

Merson was asked for his thoughts on Arsenal's latest transfer venture, and admitted he is delighted the midfielder is available for so cheap.

"I think he's a top drawer player," Merson said on Sky Sports.

"I nearly fell off my chair, £45million, I don't think that's a lot of money, at all for the quality of player you are getting here.

"The one thing he brings as well. Discipline. He has played at Atletico Madrid, who are one of the most disciplined teams in Europe and he would do that.

"He's not a midfield player who goes running all over the place and you are thinking 'where has he gone?'. He is very disciplined. I think he would be a great signing."
