Paul Merson names the Everton player Arsenal should have signed in the summer transfer window

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has claimed that Arsenal should have made a move for former Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph during the summer transfer window.

Delph left the Premier League Champions during the window, signing for Everton in a deal worth £8m. The 29-year-old impressed in his first league appearance for the Toffees in the 3-2 victory over Wolves on Sunday.

Granit Xhaka struggled in his last outing against Spurs, conceding a avoidable penalty in the first half,  leading to Merson questioning why Unai Emery didn't make a summer move for Delph.

"I look at him [Delph] and wonder why Arsenal didn't sign him," he said on Sky Sports' the Debate.

"He is better than the midfield three that played against Tottenham."

Delph was often deployed in the left back role during his time at Manchester City, and Merson has highlighted his versatility as another as to why he would have been an astute signing for Emery's men.

"He could have played at left back instead of Kolasinac on Sunday," he continued.

"I am a big fan of Delph. He can play in certain positions and is an excellent signing for Everton."

Delph has made 170 Premier League appearances so far in a career that has seen him play for Leeds United, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

The midfielder was part of the England squad who made it to the World Cup semi-final in 2018, although he has been left out of Gareth Southgate's latest Three Lions squad for the European qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.
