Paul Merson makes two bold Arsenal claims ahead of the summer transfer window

Arsenal legend Paul Merson insists that his former club need some serious transfer help from a defensive standpoint this summer and has made two bold claims ahead of the upcoming window.

While Arsenal are in the semi-finals of the Europa League and still competing for the top four in the Premier League, Merson insists that the Gunners' back four has not been good enough for the most part.

Arsenal fans have criticised the defending from Unai Emery's men time and time again this season, with Shkodran Mustafi bearing the brunt of the criticism from supporters in recent weeks.

But Merson has gone one step further and suggested that the entire Leicester City backline is better than Arsenal's in light of the Gunners' 3-0 defeat at the Foxes last Sunday.

Leicester ripped Arsenal's backline to shreds at the King Power Stadium as Youri Tielemans bagged one goal and Jamie Vardy added a brace to embarrass the Gunners.

This left Arsenal up against it in the battle for the Premier League top four after three consecutive defeats, with Merson praising Leicester's current defensive options of Ricardo Pereira, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell.

“I’d take the Leicester back four over Arsenal’s all day long,” Merson said on Sky Sports. “I’d swap the whole lot tomorrow morning.

“Not a chance (any Arsenal defenders would get in the Leicester team). To be fair there’s not one at Man United’s who’d make Leicester’s."

Merson also went on to say that Arsenal need to sign up to seven players ahead of the summer window.

"It's a worry for me. Arsenal need about six or seven players," Merson added.
