Paul Merson makes pointed Wilfried Zaha remark after failed Arsenal and Everton transfer moves

Wilfried Zaha's future was one of the big talking points in the summer transfer window.

The Crystal Palace talisman is often the centre of attention when it comes to transfer windows, with Tottenham previously linked with a move.

This time around it was Arsenal and latterly Everton who were linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international.

Arsenal reportedly started off with a £40million bid, while Everton went in with offers of around £60million and £70million.

Crystal Palace stood firm on their £80million valuation, however, and Zaha stayed put, even despite handing in a transfer request at Selhurst Park.

Zaha started the season on the substitutes' bench, following all the speculation, but was soon in the starting lineup as Palace secured seven points from their opening four games.

But Zaha barely got a look-in as Palace were thrashed 4-0 by a resurgent Tottenham on Saturday - a game that Arsenal legend Paul Merson was watching for Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday.

And Merson made a pointed remark about Zaha's ability in relation to the rest of the Palace side following the defeat.

He said: "You look at it and Zaha had one shot straight at the keeper. Every time he got the ball they fouled him. Every single time he got the ball they fouled him.

"It must be frustrating for him, playing at Palace and I don't want to sound disrespectful, but he's better than that, it seems like he has to do it all on his own."
