Paul Merson makes Hugo Lloris statement Spurs fans will agree with ahead of North London Derby

Paul Merson has described Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as underrated.

Hugo Lloris has played in all of Tottenham's Premier League games so far this season, in which they have won three and lost two.

The Frenchman has been rested in the Europa Conference League and Carabao Cup games, making way for summer signing, Pierluigi Gollini.

Nuno Espirito Santo's first choice shot stopper has already had to make 19 saves this season and although he has been in goal in their most recent two 3-0 defeats, he has helped prevent them being much larger scorelines.

The 34-year-old recently made his 300th Premier League appearance for the Lilywhites, as he edges closer to his tenth year in north London.

And former Arsenal player Merson has been singing his praises, adding that he feels he does not get the credit he deserves.

"He’s a World Cup winner,” Merson said on 90min Football when he and fellow former footballer, Jamie O'Hara, were asked to make a combined XI out of the two North London Derby sides, with Lloris making the cut.

“I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves, I think he’s very underrated."

The French international won the World Cup with his country in 2018 and is a high performer for both club and country.

Lloris made some vital saves against Thomas Tuchel's side, including a stop to deny a Marcus Alonso volley in the opening minutes of the London derby against Chelsea.

When Tottenham suffer a heavy defeat, it may seem hard to find praise for a goalkeeper but the skipper has definitely saved Spurs in many games.

Merson went on to explain Lloris' importance, even though he isn't always spoken about alongside the top goalkeepers.

“They don’t talk about him in the same bracket as Ederson, or Alisson, but for me I think he is a top goalie and he makes big saves.”

Lloris' contract runs out at the end of the season and it could be the end of a long chapter, if he decides to leave the N17 based club.

Tottenham's North London Derby on Sunday is a big game for everyone and Lloris can continue showing why he is Spurs' number 1.

The game will be played at The Emirates and kick-off is at 16:30.
