Paul Merson issues Timo Werner warning ahead of Chelsea's clash with Manchester United

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson has said that he doesn't think Chelsea striker Timo Werner "looks like a goalscorer," insisting he would back Tammy Abraham to score more.

After making a real name for himself in the Bundesliga in recent years for RB Leipzig, Chelsea won the race for his signature in June last year, despite reported interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Unfortunately, the Germany international's maiden season in England has not gone according to plan, scoring just ten goals in all competitions so far, with only five of that overall tally coming in the Premier League.

Despite that, the 24-year-old has shown positive signs in recent weeks following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the club's new head coach. Tuchel has handed Werner a new position within the team and it, certainly so far, seems to be paying dividends, with his recent performances against the likes of Sheffield United and Newcastle United producing a goal and two assists.

Although he has shown glimpses that he is heading in the right direction under Tuchel's stewardship, Sky Sports pundit Merson is not convinced, admitting that a lot of work still needs to be done, as well as backing Werner's teammate, Abraham, to score more goals.

"I would have Tammy Abraham to score more goals than Timo Werner," Merson told Sky Sports. "I would, there is no doubt about that.

"There is a lot of work to be done with this lad. I know he has been brought in at 24 years of age for all that money. I have watched loads of him there and there is loads of stuff with him in and he is nowhere near the finished article, not even close.

"There are times when he will go down the wing and cross the ball into the box when there is literally nobody in there.

"It just seems like he is getting rid of the ball. It seems to me like it is all 100 miles per hour and there is a lot of work to be done, a lot of work with him at the moment.

"But if you said to me: 'Who is going to score the most goals?', I would say Tammy Abraham.

"Abraham is a goalscorer and I don't think this lad looks like a goalscorer."

So far this term, as outlined above, Werner has ten goals to his name in all competitions whilst Abraham, who has scored just one goal since Tuchel's arrival, has found the back of the net on 12 separate occasions.
