Paul Merson identifies the player who is 'absolutely perfect' for Newcastle

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson believes Allan Saint-Maximin is 'absolutely perfect' for Newcastle United.

Saint-Maximin has made a huge impact on Tyneside this season, both on and off the pitch, and he is quickly establishing himself as the club's talisman.

The 23-year-old has been in blistering form since the restart and his three assists in Wednesday's 4-1 win over Bournemouth capped a third successive man-of-the-match performance in the Premier League.

The Frenchman is likely to miss this Wednesday's trip to Manchester City with a minor injury in what is set to be a huge blow for Newcastle's chances at the Etihad Stadium.

Of the Magpies' 11 Premier League wins this season, Saint-Maximin has started in 10 of them. Of the 11 games Saint-Maximin has missed out on this term, Newcastle have lost just once.

He is of paramount importance to Newcastle's success and Sky Sports pundit, Merson, believes he will keep getting better with each passing match.

"I think he has got better," he told Gillette Soccer Saturday.

"He reminds me of [Adama] Traore a couple of years ago. He would be 100 mile an hour but didn't calm down or relax when he got into a certain position.

"As the season has gone on I think this lad has been absolutely brilliant.

"He has got pace, he gets his head up, he brings people into the game and he is an absolute find.

"The advantage you have is teams have a go at Newcastle and when they come and have a go when they have that pace on the counter attack then he is absolutely perfect.

"The lad is improving week in and week out and I think this lad is going to be a top player."
