Paul Merson identifies Arsenal star who should replace Granit Xhaka as captain

Paul Merson has made a bizarre claim that David Luiz should be named as Arsenal captain in place of Granit Xhaka.

The Brazilian international only joined the club from Chelsea in the summer, and his displays so far have been met with mixed reviews.

Meanwhile Xhaka has been handed the armband for every match he has played in, but boss Unai Emery is yet to appoint an official club captain.

The Swiss midfielder has been criticised for his role in the Gunners' season so far, with a number of below-par performances, and Merson says Emery must act now and make a change.

Speaking on Sky Sports' The Debate (via the Mail ), Merson said: "David Luiz has got to be captain, he's a serial winner.

"People have a go at him because one week he'll be a 2/10 and the next a 9/10, but he's going to play every week."

Emery is set to name his full-time captain after the Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

But the Spaniard has previously discussed sharing the responsibility between a number of players rather than just one.

Merson added: "The worrying thing for me is I heard the manager say he's going to have five captains, which tells me he has no idea what his team is.

"Unai Emery's been there a year-and-a-half, he's got to have five captains because he doesn't have a clue what his best team is. He hasn't got a clue.

"The good teams are the ones who play virtually the same team every week, but with Arsenal you don't know who it'll be from week to week.

"I'm not the greatest lover of a forward being the captain, but [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang's another one. Those front three should pick themselves straight away and you go from there - they'll play every week, if they're fit."
