Paul Merson explains why Liverpool shouldn't win title with snooker analogy

Paul Merson has explained why Liverpool cannot be handed the Premier League title before the end of the season with a snooker anaology.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds are 25 points clear of closest rivals Manchester City at the top of the table after 29 games played this campaign.

Liverpool need just six points to clinch the title, but the season has been suspended until at least April 4 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

It's unclear whether clubs in the top-flight will get the chance to complete the campaign, which has sparked much uncertainty.

One scenario would be to cancel the season now and award Liverpool the title, given that they are top of the tree at this stage.

But former Arsenal star Merson is against the idea, and has used a snooker anaology to explain why the concept doesn't sit right with him.

Merson told Sky Sports: "It's all well saying Liverpool are 25 points clear, but if I played snooker with my mate tomorrow, and I needed 25 snookers to win, and he said: 'The game has finished, there's no point playing on!' - for the next week or two, I'd be saying: 'But I could have won that!'

"You really feel for them, waiting 30 years for a title. If it was Manchester City 25 points clear, nobody would care! Because they've won it already. This team hasn't won it for 30 years! This is like a film.

"I really feel for them; even if you gave them the league now, mathematically it's not won. I know they've won it in essence, we all know that, but it's not the same! It's a shame.
